Intelligent Transport Systems Make Progress Around the Developing World

This article discusses how Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) have been deployed in the developing world from 1999-2004, the time period between the publication of the first and second editions of the PIARC ITS Handbook. The discussion focuses on the evolution of ITS in 12 developing countries — from field trials and feasibility studies to full-scale deployment — in an attempt to identify major patterns in ITS development as transport problems have emerged. Country profiles of recent full-scale deployments are offered that cover assessments of how ITS has helped to ease major transport problems, along with identifying key ITS challenges and future plans for meeting them. The profiles form the basis of the latest edition of the handbook (second edition, World Road Association-PIARC, 2004).
