IMPROVEMENT OF CONCRETE SURFACING EVENNESS BY MILLING OFF

The removal of tracking grooves from a concrete carriageway which had carried traffic for 37 years was carried out in autumn 1976 on the a1, west motorway in Austria. By means of milling off, the evenness of the surface was improved and the safety of traffic increased. Aquaplaning, particularly on the nearside lane, led to accidents; a 2 to 4 cm depth of milling obviated the aquaplaning. The concrete withstood the effects of milling off without deterioration. Joint damage was tolerable. The required evenness of the surface for traffic purposes was achieved over a length of 2.5 km of the motorway. Observation of the carriageway for a period of six months with heavy traffic flows (17000 vehicles per day) has shown no shortcomings. Price of the milling, 12 Austrian schillings per square metre.
