Performance and Lessons from Implementation of BRT in the United States
This paper updates the state of knowledge about Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects placed into service within the past few years in the United States. It profiles five case studies of BRT systems in Miami, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Boston and Los Angeles for which complete planning and operating data are available. For each case, it summarizes the local factors that led to the project's genesis, the general features of the project and how it was marketed, the performance compared to pre-existing transit services, the market response to those improvements, and the effects on transit planning. It concludes by providing lessons related to quality of service impacts, ridership gains, and the BRT planning and political process.
