EVALUATION OF THE SEVERITY OF INJURIES RECEIVED IN PEDESTRIAN/VEHICLE ACCIDENTS - RESULTS OF EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES

In pedestrian/motor vehicle accidents, the injured pedestrian, his injuries and the extent of his injuries can serve to assist the reconstruction of the accident. For any reconstruction, for the experimental simulation of accidents designed to improve the external safety of motor cars, and for trials with dummies, procedures and criteria are necessary with which the real risk of injury can be estimated from measurements of accelerations and forces in the limbs of a dummy. The article describes such a procedure, which has been developed from the results of biomechanical tests and from a comparison with actual accidents, and which is represented in graphical form. In this procedure, the degree of severity of relative injuries is defined from the measured values of the impact decelerations, which occurred in reality under comparable conditions. From this a serviceable instrument has been created with which to judge close to reality, and in experimental conditions, the various extents of influences on the severity of pedestrian accidents. As the severity of pedestrian injuries is essentially determined by the initial impact against the vehicle, the speed of the vehicle at the moment of impact can be ascertained from the severity of the injuries incurred, and the accident, from the point of view of the extent of the injuries, can be reconstructed Experimentally fairly accurately. /TRRL/
