DEVELOPMENT OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY IN THE HIGHWAY FIELD

MISE EN OEUVRE D'UNE POLITIQUE DE L'ENVIRONNEMENT DANS LE DOMAINE ROUTIER

The leading principles of the environmental policy as defined by the road authorities are outlined. The author recalls that the implementation of the policy is carried out at 3 levels: information of services; definition of working methods; reference to real experiences. This article deals with the first two levels. The information on environmental constraints must take into account the impact of the construction of a new road on the rural environment, traffic noise, aesthetic aspects, and respect of natural sites. To take care of the environment also implies the development of a new methodology for brief preliminary projects of motorway or for infrastructure studies in urban environment. /TRRL/
