Mobile Source Air Toxics from Idling Trucks: Report from Mexican Border

The Texas Transportation Institute, Clean Air Technologies, Inc. and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory conducted a study to estimate the emissions produced by Mexican trucks crossing at the El Paso – Ciudad Juarez border locations. A companion paper at this conference describes the methodologies as well as emissions for the criteria pollutants, NOx, CO, and HC. This paper gives results for mobile source air toxics (MSATs) and diesel PM from the idling trucks. Results showed that the MSATs formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein were emitted at rates similar to the PM emission rates. The large numbers of trucks and long waits at border crossings can thus have important implications for regional air quality as well as result in “hot spots” of poor air quality.
