A STUDY OF THE ECONOMICS OF ROAD VEHICLE LIMITS; BRIDGES

This report presents the methodology and models used in the study to determine the effect on bridges of changes in vehicle masses and dimensions. The load capacities of individual bridges and bridge-size culverts are compared, on the basis of handing moments firstly with the loads produced by trucks under the existing mass limits, and secondly with the estimated loads produced by trucks under any set of alternative limits. On the basis of this comparison, bridges which become deficient under the alternative limits are assumed to be replaced. Alternative procedures for costing these deficient bridges are discussed and the procedure used in the study is outlined. /TRRL/
