Global Transportation Flexibility in Multinational Corporation Supply Chains

This paper seeks to provide a framework for integrating the global transportation network with multinational corporations (MNC) supply chains. Encompassing the two networks within a single conceptual framework generates key issues that require investigation: 1) how does the performance of the global transportation network influence the performance of MNC supply chains, and 2) how can flexibility in the global transportation network lead to performance improvements in MNC supply chains. Developing the concept of transportation flexibility and its relationship to supply chain agility is a critical imperative to understanding the interdependence of these two networks. This conceptual framework includes two types of transportation flexibilities, structural and temporal, identified as technical dimensions of flexibility in the global transportation network that provide a bridge between the tactical performance of the transportation function and the overall performance of MNC supply chains. Propositions developed for this relationship provide a platform for studying the value of the transportation function to both networks.
