Field Monitoring of Two Research Sheet Pile Walls During Excavation
Two instrumented PZ22 sheet pile walls were installed to indirectly measure lateral earth pressure. Soil between the sheet piles was excavated in five equal lifts to 6.1 m to create two cantilevered walls. Four of the piles (two each side) were instrumented with sixteen vibrating wire strain gages each, eight per flange. The strain gages were connected to a datalogger that collected strain measurements every minute through the duration of the project. An additional four piles were fitted with a square steel tube for slope inclinometer readings. Slope inclinometer measurements were conducted daily after the completion of each excavation lift. Moment and deflection were measured for purposes of the study as well as to assess the daily safety of the project for workers performing the excavation. The results showed that the moments and deflections remained within safe tolerances throughout the excavation.
