REDUCING ENGINE NOISE IN PRIVATE VEHICLES. COMPARISON OF BOXING-IN OF ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND MEASURES INSIDE ENGINES

MINDERUNG DES MOTORGERAEUSCHES BEI PERSONENWAGEN. GEGENUEBERSTELLUNG VON MOTORRAUMKAPSELUNG UND MOTORINTERNEN MASSNAHMEN

In considering the private vehicle in town areas from the noise emission aspect it is to be observed, that the difference between road noise and maximum driving noise should be only 8 to 12 db(a) in comparison with commercial vehicles. However, as the road noise represents the limit for an external noise reduction, it must be the aim to reduce the noise of the prime mover in the region of 8 to 12 db(a). This aim can be achieved in two ways: boxing-in of the engine compartment or improvement of the details of the engine and drive assembly. On first sight, boxing-in appears to be the simpler and more effective concept. It will have to prove itself in everyday usage with the relevant temperature problems. The alternative of improving the details is laborious but does not present any problems in service. In the face of the possibilities which have not yet been fully exhausted in the primary sector, a vehicle noise of 76 db(a) can be achieved even without boxing-in. The development time for both concepts to commencement of mass production must be estimated at 10 years. This relative long period takes into consideration engine and vehicle concepts which cannot be developed further and also the extended development time required for new generations of engines and vehicles. /TRRL/
