PROPORTIONING OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES: GRADING CRITERIA. HOT- AND COLD-COATED MIXTURES

DOSIFICACION DE MEZCLAS BITUMINOSAS: CRITERIOS SOBRE GRANULOMETRIAS DE LAS MEZCLAS BITUMINOSAS. MEZCLAS BITUMINOSAS EN FRIO. MEZCLAS BITUMINOSAS EN CALIENTE

This article stresses the importance of aggregate particle size distribution in bituminous mixtures. The particle size distribution, through the internal friction of aggregates, influences the viscosity and roughness of the mixture; the percentage of filler affects the viscosity of the mastic, while the voids content influences the friction and viscosity of the mixture. A study is made of the different criteria governing the grading of bituminous mixtures, emphasizing the influence of the voids content in the aggregates and modifications of the latter. Mention is made of the grading envelopes cited in the new standards concerning hot- and cold-coated materials. In these standards, the quantity of filler to be used has been extrensively reduced. /TRRL/
