THE COMPOSITION OF FRESH CONCRETE FROM THE LABORATORY TO THE SITE

LA COMPOSITION DU BETON HYDRAULIQUE DU LABORATOIRE AU CHANTIER

A method is presented for the limited forecast of the behaviour of concrete valid for certain compositions and working procedures. This forecast range is valid for fresh concrete when the fines content is near to optimum, and it corresponds to an intrinsic approximative factor which characterizes its workability. Experiments are described which aim to establish the limits of this forecast range by defining the critical workability of fresh concrete. The studies show that there is no longer any contradiction between laboratory strength tests and structural requirements - the strongest concrete under test conditions is in principle the same in the structure. The best concrete is that which, at a constant water content, is the most workable, and this condition enables the experimental determination of the relative proportions of solids. The research reported is intended to improve knowledge regarding the effects of the accidental variations of a parameter on the strength of in place concrete. /TRRL/
