March Traffic Deaths Up 7 Percent
In March 2006, motor vehicle traffic deaths rose 7 percent as compared to March 2005, going from 3,460 to 3,600. Disabling injuries rose 4 percent from the previous year, while the cost of motor vehicle collisions through March 2006 rose 4 percent from 2005, to a total of close to $53.4 billion. The estimated annual mileage death rate remained at 1.6 deaths per 100 million miles of vehicle travel, the same as for 2005. Statistics on a statewide basis are also given.
