NEW ALUMINUM ALLOYS READY TO MUSCLE IN ON TITANIUM

After living in the shadow of titanium and composite materials advancements for several years, new aluminum alloys are receiving keen attention from materials engineers. Prospects are that the new generation of commercial transport planes will draw heavily on these new developments. In fact, in some applications, aluminum may even replace titanium. Some dramatic developments in several areas are highlighted. Processing and purity of high-strength aluminum alloys will be improved. Thermo-mechanical treatments will enhance physical properties, and added stress-corrosion resistance will be achieved.
