"Cost-Productivity" (C-P) is proposed as a valid measure of aircraft usefulness. For civil passenger aircraft it is number of passengers times cruise speed divided by aircraft unit cost. This concept is validated by comparing (C-P)//7//5 versus 1975 unit sales of U. S. general aviation aircraft. A C-P analysis indicates poor market penetration by jet VSTOL of the jet transport market, but possibly good penetration of the small business jet market. The most promising market potential is against transport helicopters. Jet VSTOL could do the same work per dollar invested as current helicopters, but three times as fast. Military jet VSTOL transports will not be directly usable for civil applications, but the technology, as shown by past experience, will transfer readily.
