GENERALIZED THAW SETTLEMENT OF SOIL

The paper reports on a study that considers thaw-settlement in terms of testing and analysis that includes the effect of lateral yield in addition to one-dimensional methods. The magnitude of the stresses used for each test are chosen to provide maximum data to assess the significance of the vertical and horizontal stress and the development of pore pressure during the thawing of soils. The results of the test program provides data, not presently available, compare the magnitude of one and three-dimensional thaw-settlements for soils subjected to similar vertical stresses; evaluate the effect of lateral strain on the residual stress developed during undrained thaw; determine Young's modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio during the consolidation stage of thawing; and develop a model, based on triaxial tests and linear elasticity, for predicitng thaw-settlement of frozen soils.
