The article describes some possible design configurations for air freighters which could handle the vast increase in freight traffic that is expected to occur through the end of this century. A very wide body design which could be introduced in the 1980's would have payloads more than 50 percent larger than for the 747F. Other, more exotic, configurations that could be utilized later on include a tandem wing configuration and a tail-less 'flying wing' configuration, as well as very large aircraft weighing as much as five million pounds and having wing span as great as 150 meters (500 feet).
