Research on Characteristics Change of Transportation System During Urban Expansion of Shanghai

This paper focus on the development of urban economy, population, jobs and urban morphology as well as the impact which made on transportation system during urban expansion of Shanghai in recent twenty years. Based on the data from three comprehensive transport surveys of Shanghai since 1986, the changes of residents travel demand, vehicles travel demand and the spatial distribution of trips are studied as typical characteristics of transportation system. Meanwhile the cause that results in these changes is discussed, which reveals some facts: (a) Economic development promotes population explosion and stimulates residents travel demand greatly; (b) Unsynchronized migration of population and jobs from central district to periphery district of Shanghai make trips and congestion diffuse in the same way; and (c) Urban sprawl based on single center of a city promote the trip ratio of individual motorized mode, which imposes great pressure on road traffic. It is concluded that urban development should get along well with the transportation system during urbanization and urban mobility.
