Fast and Reliable Numerical Solution for Multiclass Lighthill-Whitham-Richards Traffic Flow Model

In this paper, we formulate a discretized macroscopic model for mixed traffic networks based on an extension of Lighthill, Whitham and Richards’ model (LWR). In order to solve numerically this model, accurate and reliable approximation algorithms are very important to ensure that the models’ properties are accurately represented. An inappropriate numerical scheme may result in deviate or erratic model behavior, such as large numerical dissipations, numerical instabilities, etc. To this end, we will introduce a novel numerical solution that allows to improve the existing numerical schemes for multiclass LWR model. In our proposed numerical scheme, the evaluation of the eigenvalues captures the differences between free-flow and congested flow conditions: for example, in case of free-flow, disturbances in the flow travel in the downstream direction. It is found that the proposed scheme produces relatively small smoothing effect. The new numerical solution also allows to explain the dispersion of multiclass traffic platoon properly.
