Evaluating Structural Performance of Base and Subbase Materials at Louisiana Accelerated Pavement Research Facility

Three full-scale asphalt pavement sections, each having a 50-mm thin hot-mix asphalt (HMA) surface layer, were tested at Louisiana Accelerated Pavement Research Facility. Those sections were generally varied in the base and subbase materials, but with same layer thickness. After 225,000 accelerated wheel loading repetitions, one of the test sections failed due to surface permanent deformation (rut depth > 12.5mm). The other two sections have also developed a certain amount of rutting at surfaces. Non destructive test (NDT) data measured during the entire period of accelerated loading, as well as in situ instrumentation results (e.g. pressures and in depth deflections), were used to evaluate the structural performance of pavements tested. The results indicated that the test section with a furnace slag stabilized Blended Calcium Sulfate (or BCS, an industry waste material) base performed significantly better than its counterpart section with a flyash stabilized BCS base. However, both BCS sections out-performed the pavement section with a foam-asphalt stabilized base. In addition, a cement-treated soil subbase could distribute the load considerably better than a lime-treated subbase, indicating a better loading carry capacity. Further investigation illustrates that both the NDT data and instrumentation results can reveal the structural deterioration fairly well. The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (M-E PDG) software was employed to predict the total rutting developed in those three test sections. Finally, a simple pavement damage model for the rut depth prediction was proposed for flexible pavements. The proposed damage model relates flexible pavement rutting development to the in-situ surface deflection characteristics, has a potential to be directly utilized in a mechanistic-empirical pavement design and analysis.
