AUTOMATION OF FILLING STATIONS

Self-service operations are distinguished by two different methods of payment according to whether the filling station is attended or unattended. When the filling station is attended during its opening hours, since there are no attendants at the pumps, payment is made at a central cash desk with one employee. This is made possible by the teletransmission of data from the pumps to the central cash desk, as well as by a system of remote control of the pumps by the cash desk where the attendant not only carries out the actual cash operations, but also keeps the whole filling station under control. This is the so-called post-payment method, because payment is usually made after filling up. When the station is unattended during the night, the number of pumps in use is reduced to two or three and these are operated from an automatic cash desk which enables the pumps to supply exact quantities of fuels according to the amounts paid. It is therefore called the pre-payment method.
