SANDWICKS AT SANDWICH

This article discusses the installation procedures of Sandwick Prepackaged vertical sand drains during construction of the Sandwich Bypass. The approach embankment leading up to, and on either side of, the bypass cross sensitive flood plains founded on recent alluvial deposits of soft to very soft clays and silty clays. It was decided to construct the embankments in advance in order to give a time lag between their completion and opening the bypass to traffic, so as to allow primary settlement to become complete. The vertical drains were put over the full tow width of the embankment. This meant that the shale had to be predrilled at every drain position ahead of the installation rig. The three installation rigs averaged over 100 drains a day throughout the contract. After the drains were installed, work resumed on raising the embankment by stages to the desired height of the viaduct.
