The method used up to now by the UIC for determining braking behaviour in trains and individual vehicles is described in UIC Leaflet 544. This method is based on the idea of brake/weight and the percentage of this weight. This weight is calculated according to the average value of braking distance measured by means of the UIC method. The authors are proposing a modification to this method, consisting in changed values for the coefficients given. An example is given of braking distances in trains at 100 and 160 km/h, with the brake/weight percentage varying according to the method used. The two results obtained are discussed.
