Managing Recreational Activities – A Guide for Maritime Local Authorities in England

This paper describes how coasts and estuaries, with their unique features, provide a great deal of diversity as well as opportunities for recreation and tourism. Commercial organizations, recreational groups and individuals all use the coast for enjoyment. The range of interests/activities often requires some form of management in order to reduce potential conflicts between disparate user groups and/or the natural environment. Within England, Maritime Local Authorities (MLAs), in conjunction with Harbor Authorities (Has) and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), are best placed in order to placed to facilitate the appropriate management of coastal related activities, as they understand and live with the local issues and pressures that arise. This paper summarizes the issues surrounding coastal recreational activities. The approach taken to gather the information relevant to the Guide outlines the content of the Guide and provides a description of the preferred stepped approach for MLA’s to help advise on appropriate management approaches for coastal recreation activities.
