NEW TEST METHODS FOR DETERMINING THE LUMINANCE OF CRUSHED AGGREGATES

The reflection properties of a road surfacing are determined by the depth of its roughness and the chipping material of the mix. The brightness of the chippings in the surfacing is different depending on the dryness or the wetness of the surface. The newly developed test method must include the luminance of surfacings under damp conditions. The measuring equipment is described in detail. 4 different types of material are used in the experiments. Artificial brightening materials, anorthosite, "light coloured" and "dark coloured" natural stone with a granulation of 2/5, 5/8, 8/11. The resulting measurements are recorded and considered separately according to luminance in the dry and the damp state, as is the comparison of luminance in relation to the drying process over time. Equivalent factors for comparison are worked out for converting mixes in percent by weight to percent by volume. 2 calculated examples are presented for completed blacktop surfacings. /TRRL/
