Almost all production processes in construction involve transporting operations. The tower crane plays a key role especially in structural works. It is therefore very important to select the correct crane and the correct assembly of plant to be used with it. The important factors dictating crane choice are the maximum required load-distance moment and the relationships between reach at maximum load and load at maximum reach. The author differentiates between two conditions for use: (1) loads, loading and off-loading locations are not constant, (2) the type of load and type of loading and off-loading locations are constant. For condition (1) the output cannot be calculated, since it depends to a large extent on the crane driver. For condition (2) the output can be calculated and from this the requirements of the machine established. Calculated examples are given for the combinations "concrete mixer--tower crane" and "concrete mixer--intermediate silo--tower crane" using as a model a crane used in concrete transporting operations. It is shown that here careful disposition of plant was economically worthwhile. /TRRL/
