SINGLE LAYER CONCRETE PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION ON THE MOTORWAY A61 KREFELD - LUDWIGSHAVEN OF THE BINGEN - ALZEY SECTION

EINLAGIGER BETONFAHRBAHNDECKENBAU AUF DER BAB A 61 KREFELD - LUDWIGSHAFEN IM BAUABSCHNITT BINGEN - ALZEY

In the course of construction of the new motorway A61 on the left hand side of the Rhine, 2 sections totalling 28 km were built in single layers. The construction consisted of a 22 cm concrete pavement, 10 cm bituminous roadbase and a minimum frost blanket of 38 cm. The mixing plant was designed for a length of 750 M per working day and section. For single layer construction, workability of the concrete and uniform consistency were particularly important. Varying short period travel speeds are to be avoided as far as possible. The mix design included 30% rhine sand, 15% upper rhine gravel 2/8 mm and 55% upper rhine gravel, refined chippings 8/16. In order to ensure that the dowels and anchor irons were vibrated into half the thickness of the course, the contractor developed an efficient piece of equipment which guaranteed exact positioning. The joints at 5 M spacing were cut. A small number of random cracks were repaired with Luxit JH-N, a two-part product based on epoxy resin. /TRRL/
