THE EFFECT AND APPLICATION OF CONCRETE PLASTICISERS

WIRKUNGSWEISE UND ANWENDUNG VON BETONVERFLUESSIGERN

The term "fluidiser (plasticiser)" although customary in recent times, is not quite correct, since it only partly describes the effectiveness of these substances as additives to concrete and mortar. In the course of the development of plasticisers dissimilar materials (from transformed natural products up to synthetic detergents) were added to superficially activating substances (for example the so-called sulphite wastes), to reduce undesired characteristics and increase desired properties. Plasticisers of the usual type take effect physical-chemically without directly affecting the chemistry of hydration. However, an improved breakdown of the cement is achieved. Detailed information is given concerning the better usage of plasticisers, on the reduction of surface tension and on the dispersing of solid matter. Further to this, some additional characteristics of plasticisers and their desirable and undesirable effects are discussed. /TRRL/
