INFLUENCE OF THE ROCK MASS PROPERTIES ON THE STABILITY AND COSTS WITH FULL FACE BORING

The report reviews ways in which rock mass properties influence the practical results obtained during full face boring, mainly in the case of tunnel boring with rolling cutters. Possible working disturbance due to stability problems and the amount of support are discussed. The boring process and the influence of rock discontinuities, such as partings and joints, and of rock strength and abrasiveness are discussed in detail. Pre-investigations, tests of suitability for boring and models for prediction of tunnel boring capacity and costs are also considered. Tunnel boring is, under Scandinavian conditions, still considered to be more sensitive to the rock mass properties than tunneling by drilling and blasting. In formations that are suitable for boring and that do not have extreme stability problems tunnel boring may compete with conventional methods. /TRRL/
