QUALITY OF THE MIX IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY. 4TH INFORMATIVE MEETING OF THE VTA

QUALITAET DES MISCHGUTES IN DER BRD. 4 INFORMATIONSTAGUNGEN DES VTA

The demands for higher quality of bituminous mixes as a result of efforts to obtain surfacing with better initial skidding resistance and a higher degree of resistance against deformation under heavy traffic, has led to corresponding tight demands on quality control. This comprises suitability tests, property control tests and control testing. The suitability test is not for the purpose of establishing the quality of the chosen building material, but it is to single out the material which, amongst the materials acceptable in the specification, will be most suitable as regards local conditions. The control of the characteristics is to ensure the uniform consistency and quality of the mix required by the technical specifications and guidelines. It includes the testing of the aggregates by the screening of samples and the temperature of the dry stone mixture, the temperature of the binder material and of the mix, and the mix ratio of binder and aggregate. As distinct from the suitability tests and property control tests, which are the responsibility of the contractor, the control tests are part of the client's obligations. A significant part of the control test is the method of taking samples which has been fixed by DIM 1996, Sheet 2. As the test results only refer to the relevant sample, this must correspond to the average properties of the total quantity so as to avoid misinterpretation of the test values. /TRRL/
