THE BASIC NETWORK: A FLEXIBLE SYSTEM FOR CALCULATING TRAVEL TIMES AND TRAVEL DISTANCES

The lack of a unique coding system for transport networks led to the development of a basic network system with the necessary software. Networks coded in accordance with this system are compiled in a data-bank, enabling more efficient use. The article gives a systematic description of the coding system and data input for private and public transport networks and describes the data control which is directed towards guaranteeing a rapid and faultless application. The storing and retrieval system and the documentation of the contents of the data-bank are also discussed. Finally attention is given to the use of the system and the programs developed for the calculation of travel times and distances. /Author/TRRL/
