Strategic challenges for regional transport
Challenges in the market for regional passenger transport in Germany are considered. The organisational structure of DB Regio AG, Germany's largest provider of local passenger services, is outlined. Approximately 90% of the German rail network is owned by DB Netz. In 1996 a law was passed that allowed local transportation to be regionalised and there are now 60 companies in the rail regional transportation sector. These are either large international transportation companies or local or regional public companies. Four major trends in the German regional transportation market are identified and discussed: intensifying competition, increasing numbers of tenders, a focus on passenger oriented requirements in biddings, and a rise in the importance of passenger fares. DB Regio's strategy and market outlook are described.
