ENERGY CONSERVATION THROUGH URBAN LAND USE ALLOCATION: A LINEAR PROGRAMMING APPROACH

Energy conservation can be effected through more efficient design of urban areas. Energy efficient spatial allocations of urban activities can be generated through linear programming. In order to produce realistic optimization model outputs, it is necessary to know not only the activities in which conservation may be achieved, but also the economic processes through which urban development occurs. This paper describes an approach in which a linear programming land use allocation model may be incorporated into an urban development policy-making process to take advantage of the energy saving potential of efficient urban design.
