PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE OPERATION OF AIRCRAFT ON WET RUNWAYS

PROBLEMI ASSOCIATI ALL'OPERATIVITA DEL TRAFFICO AEREO SU PISTE AEROPORTUALI "CONTAMINATE"

This article discusses problems associated with wet airport runways: (a) on landing, when the reduced skid resistance results in decreased directional control, reduced braking efficiency, and a greatly increased stopping distance; and (b) on take-off, when the relative take-off distance is increased due to the added rolling resistance caused by the film of water. It is pointed out that in both phases (landing and take-off) there is the added risk of spray from the wheels entering the engine, resulting in reduced performance from the aircraft. Road surface, speed, tyre pressure and gradient (transverse and longitudinal) parameters are analysed. /TRRL/
