Population Stability and Urban Area

This chapter discusses urban sustainability from the perspective of population stability. The authors conducted a quantitative study in the Tokyo Metropolitan Region using National Census data from 1970 to 1995, and identified 25 districts where the population remained stable. By analyzing the population age structure of these districts the authors were able to determine that the trends affecting young people seem to be the key to the population’s stabilization of these districts. The chapter regards population stability as the expression of sustainability by focusing on the function of habitation, and seeks to provide, through positive data analysis, a tentative assumption on how to approach sustainability in the urban context, particularly that of a metropolis.
