The Application of Empirical Strategic Management Research to Supply Chain Management

As the field of logistics has evolved into a broader scope of supply chain management (SCM), researchers in this field have responded by incorporating theories and methodologies from neighboring disciplines. At the same time, strategy researchers have increasingly focused on supply chain topics since SCM has become an important source of competitive advantage for many firms. This study reviews strategy literature relevant to supply chain researchers. More than 100 articles relevant to SCM drawn primarily from top strategic management journals are reviewed and categorized. This review attempts to systematically introduce the application of empirical strategy research to SCM. It is hoped that the common ground revealed in this review can facilitate future interaction between supply chain and strategy researchers.
