An analysis is given of the main factors affecting the strength of joints made between machine elements by the method of interference fitting. The effect of temperature, and the fitting together of elements made of materials with different elastic properties, are included. Graphs for joint design are presented. The design method leads to joints of minimum weight for a given joint strength, and therefore promotes economics in material. Order from BSRA as No. 48,984
