CALCULATION OF PARAMETERS FOR AN AUTOMATIC ENGINE PROTECTION SYSTEM FOR A SHIP IN A SEAWAY

Ship motion in a seaway may cause the emergence of the propeller and engine racing which, if uncontrolled, can result in excessive overloads and damage to the propulsive system. Although exact calculation of the operating conditions for propeller emergence is generally not possible in early design, it is useful for the designer to have a simple method whereby these conditions may be estimated approximately. The Author presents formulae for this purpose, together with numerical values obtained from them, calculated for two ship examples. The formulae are based on probability considerations of propeller emergence in given sea states and with given ship speeds. Order from BSRA as No. 49,064.
