A CASE FOR SLOW STEAMING

The article discusses the tanker surplus and ways to reduce and/or eliminate it. It reviews various proposals such as alternative employment of tankers, newbuilding cancellations and accelerated scrapping, bank control of shipping, load line adjustments and co-ordinated lay-up of vessels, but concludes that these measures are not thought practical or efficient compared with slow steaming. Slow steaming economies are then dealt with in some details, and the introduction of enforced speed limits is seriously considered. Order from NSFI as No. 14,801.
