MARITIME RADIOCOMMUNICATION VIA SATELLITE

KOMMUNIKATION UEBER SATELLIT FUER DEN SCHIFFSVERKEHR

The growing demand for more ship-to-shore communication links is giving rise to the need for maritime radiocommunication via a satellite. The present maritime shortwave radio system no longer satisfy the existing requirements for channel capacity and availability, nor can they be increased in number. A new intercontinental marine satellite INMARSAT for ship-to-shore radiocommunication is to be placed in orbit towards the end of the 1980s. Its subsystems, which are currently undergoing a trial workout, are described.
