This paper deals with dredges recovering sand and gravel, their development and many systems of loading and discharging employed. The need for the naval architect to be the coordinator, paying special attention to the allied services and technologies involved, e.g. soil mechanics, hydraulics etc, in order to develop the full potential of these highly specialized ships is also emphasized. In view of the losses recorded, special attention has also to be given to the stability requirements of these ships and the method of investigation required in order to ensure a level of safety at least equivalent to that required for a cargo ship of similar size.
