Wetting, drying and compression characteristics of compacted clay
The wetting, drying and compression characteristics of compacted clay were studied using samples of compacted kaolin taken through wetting, drying and isotropic compression loading. The results showed that the relationship between the specific water volume and the suction was unaffected by compaction at suction values greater than 100 kPa. This suggested that the water flowing into samples during the wetting process was largely taken up by individual aggregates in the bimodal structure. Volume changes during drying and the accompanying increase in suction were consistent with hydraulic hysteresis and the swelling and distortion of saturated aggregates. Samples in the drying process had a higher degree of saturation at a given suction value than those wetted directly to the same suction value.
