Different methods of blasting rocks are reviewed, with emphasis on the important fact that the energy of the explosive shock is not very effective in fissured or non-elastic rocks. The explosive should, therefore, be intimately in contact with the walls of the borehole and located at an optimum depth. A method of inclined drilling does not provide any apparent advantage, for the cost involved is increased by wear of the drilling bit and reduction in velocity. Drilling by expansion chamber gives more uniformity and greater fragmentation. The specific consumption of explosives is reduced and the seismic effect diminished. Delayed blasting improves fragmentation but appears to be less efficient for particularly elastic rocks. Sectional drilling is an efficient method of controlled blasting; it is economical and gives smooth linings; furthermore it considerably reduces the cost of support and lining necessary. /TRRL/
