AERIAL MONITORING OF ROAD TRAFFIC

SURVEILLANCE AERIENNE DU TRAFIC ROUTIER

The interest of aerial observation of traffic with reference to other methods is two-fold. In real time it allows the conditions of traffic flow in a given sector to be known and to be frequently updated. It also offers large possibilities of action if the latter is immediately required. Over a period of time it allows the establishment of a catalogue of characteristics points prior to the installation of detection equipment in the road. The author of the paper presents the objectives of this method of monitoring and the organisation of the work (equipment used, flight plans, radio-quidance) and suggests in conculusion the extensions that this method could find in the setting up of traffic flow plans and the control of congestion.
