DYNAMIC WHEEL LOADS OF LORRY TRAINS AND TRAILER TRUCKS AS DESIGN PARAMETERS FOR ROAD PAVEMENTS

Of decisive significance for the design of road surfacings and bases are the anticipated loadings caused by heavy goods vehicles. The concept "loading" should be taken to include not only the peak load during the transit of the wheel but also the number of repetitions of the load. Consideration must be given to the following aspects of the mechanics of contact between tyres and road surface: (1) the significance and the interaction of the material parameters (bending and deformation behaviour of "rigid" pavement slabs, modulus of subgrade reaction, permissible waviness of the surface, differences in level at joints), (2) type and vibration behaviour of the suspension units of heavy goods vehicles, (3) traffic conditions (speed, acceleration and deceleration forces, loadings, driving manoeuvres). An attempt is made to establish guidelines of general applicability and to determine those areas of the problem which require further work to give complete understanding of the mechanical behaviour of road pavements. /TRRL/
