A DIRECT READING INSTRUMENT FOR MEASUREMENT OF RESULTANT PARTICLE VELOCITY OF GROUND VIBRATION

A new instrument is described for the measurement of ground vibrations caused by civil construction activities. The device gives a direct reading of the maximum resultant peak particle velocity of the vibration for frequencies in the range 15 hz to 300 hz. This is achieved by electronically processing the signals obtained from a velocity type tri-axial geophone. The result is displayed on an analog meter or digital display. Details of the system are given. It is expected that the comparatively low cost and ease of operation of the instrument will make more widespread monitoring of ground vibration in sensitive areas possible.
