THE DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNOLOGICAL BASES FOR THE LAYOUT OF BENDS

Guidelines for the layout in plan and elevation of bends are formulated. The bend in plan is related to the centreline of the road which does not coincide with the axis of symmetry of the cross section. The elements of straight - transition curve - circular arc are readily adapted for electronic data processing. The increase in road width in the bend was determined graphically and the values are tabulated for various radii at intervals of 2 M. As far as the elevations are concerned, details of gradients and the necessary reduction in gradients are discussed. The main result is that gradients need be reduced by only 0,7% and not, as is generally believed by one half of the gradient of straight portion. Gradient computations can be carried out in the familiar manner on electronic data processing equipment. /TRRL/
