Evaluation of the VTI ECI-1 Embedded Corrosion Instrument

This report describes an evaluation of the ECI-1 Embedded Corrosion Instrument, designed to indicate several parameters related to corrosion of reinforcement in concrete. The parameters include chloride ion sensing, concrete resistivity, linear polarization resistance (LPR), corrosion potential, and concrete temperature. Using these measurements, engineers can monitor corrosion activity within reinforced concrete in a non-destructive manner. Four ECI-1 devices were evaluated in laboratory experiments in mortar samples. THis report presents the results of the laboratory evaluation. In addition to the laboratory study, four ECI-1 devices were installed in a bridge deck. Located in Northern California, the bridge deck is subjected to deicing salt applications during winter snow periods. The installation will be used to evaluate the long-term (10 to 12-years) performance of the ECI-1 devices. The reports describes the installation procedures and preliminary data for these devices.
