PROPORTIONING OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES: 3. FILLER IN BITUMINOUS MIXTURES AND CHARACTERIZATION TESTS

DOSIFICACION DE MEZCLAS BITUMINOSAS. III. EL FILLER EN LAS MEZCLAS BITUMINOSAS. PROPIEDADES Y ENSAYOS DE CARACTERIZACION

The study is concerned with the properties of filler and the characteristics which this material gives to bituminous mixes. The filler is examined from the point of view of the mechanism of the effects which it produces on the binder or on the mixture, taking into account the different factors contributing to the phenomenon and attempting to evaluate these with the aid of direct tests. Filler may be considered as a product which, when incorporated in a bituminous binder, modifies the rheological properties in the same fashion as other materials, such as elastomers and plastics, but with certain differences. These may be interpreted, their properties evaluated and their function in the mixture understood. This study deals with four fundamental points: (1) what a filler is, (2) its function and the properties which it communicates to bituminous mixtures, (3) test procedures which make it possible to discover these characteristics, (4) the criteria to be applied to the choice of filler for use in a bituminous mixture. This study was presented at a course on the proportioning of bituminous mixtures which took place at the Centre of Studies for Civil Engineering & Architecture, at Madrid from 1st-5th March 1976. /TRRL/
