In the first chapter of this book, a general discussion is conducted on the problems concerning the construction of transportation rates, and on the necessity of defining the terminology used in the field of transportation. The contents of hte following chapters: Chapter 2: The term tariff is defined and the various aspects of the functions of rates are gone into. Chapter 3: Deals with the role of transportation in society; rates as a political tool; the effects of transportation costs on the price and wage system etc. Chapter 4: A thorough study is conducted on the grounds for classification of tariffs, such as: type of transportation; the nature of the transportation services; the grounds on which rates are based; the flexibility of the tariffs. Chapter 5: Business enterprise aspects of rates are gone into, and the term price elasticity is given A mathematical definition. Chapter 6: examples of the application of rates in the various fields of transportation are given. Chapter 7: The authors present a model for construction of transportation tariffs based on the prime cost. Chapater 8: Deals with problems regarding the application of rates in the field of public transportation. Finally, a detailed list of references is given, together with a transportation-economics glossary. /TRRL/
